It's been over 100 years since such powerful earthquakes hit Türkiye (Turkey) and Syria. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that shook southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria early on Feb. 6 was just the start. Hours later, a new 7.5 tremor occurred. The death toll is climbing, with 40,000+ dead so far. Many people are still under the rubble. Countless homes, businesses, schools, and community support have been destroyed; hospitals are powerless. Hundreds of thousands are homeless and at risk for disease, exposure, and starvation. A state of emergency has been declared for 10 of Turkey's 81 provinces. I recently attended a back to school STEAM night with my son. As we were leaving I ventured with him down to the library and saw many kids laughing and having an unreal time with this thing that was moving around the room. Actually two older kids were using a remote control joy stick to control the "Robot". It was hysterical to see the kids laughing and trying to feed the robot kick balls and the robot would then throw them back for the kids to catch. My son had so much fun and can't wait to get more involved and see the "Robot" again. From the Robotics Team 514 website: Through the FIRST Robotics program at Miller Place High School, students are exposed to creative and innovative opportunities to foster their learning and growth in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These experiences are important lessons for their education and will help cultivate stronger leaders for tomorrow and for the world’s future workforce.

Millions of people in Somalia are already facing extreme levels of acute hunger because of the worst drought in decades. Some parts of the country are projected to enter a state of famine unless aid is scaled up urgently. Somalia is in the midst of its fifth consecutive failed rainy season. By mid-2023, over 8 million people—nearly half of the population—will be living through crisis levels of food insecurity as the country faces an impending famine. On Monday 6th February, two devastating 7.8 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes struck in Türkiye and Syria. As of 1 March 2023, more than 51,800 deaths have been confirmed. The EMEA Talent Acquisition team want to contribute towards the relief efforts in the area, so we are putting our baking skills to good use and having a bake sale in our Cork and Staines offices. As a result of a car accident, Stefcho is completely immobilized from the chest down. Regardless of the difficulties he is going through, Stefcho is smiling in all the photos, making efforts and fighting daily for the opportunity to walk again. There is a chance for recovery and a chance for Stefcho to walk again, but it all depends on his family being able to provide him with daily, intensive, specialized rehabilitation, as well as prostheses and a stabilizing chair so he can go to school. At the moment it is clear that there are specialized clinics in Germany, Slovakia and Israel that have equipment and specialists suitable for Stefan's condition. The offer from Germany is for EUR 30,000 for one 6-week session. The child will need four such sessions annually to restore his spine. These are only part of the costs, as they do not include the transport and stay during Stefcho's rehabilitation abroad. Special leg prostheses worth BGN 1,300 have already been ordered to keep the joints straight and avoid contractures and complications. It is necessary to order two more types of prostheses with which he can be straightened in stages - they will cost over 30,000 BGN. The chair we mentioned is between 2,000 and 4,000 BGN. Some of the orthoses need to be replaced at 6 months as Stefcho grows every day. His family is unable to cover these financial needs and they need help to see their child walk again. The terrorist group Boko Haram has been operating in northeast Nigeria since 2014. As a result, the region has experienced massive displacement, with IDPs living in dreadful conditions. The crisis in northeast Nigeria will continue unabated in 2022, with an estimated 8.4 million people urgently needing humanitarian assistance. About 80 percents are women and children. Across East Africa, millions of people are facing famine. A climate-crisis-induced drought, coupled with regional and local conflict, impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic, and soaring food prices tied to the war in Ukraine, is creating a dire situation. Over 20 million people across several East African nations, including Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan, are at risk of starvation. According to the World Food Programme (WFP), “A record 349 million people across 79 countries are facing acute food insecurity – up from 287 million in 2021. More than 900,000 people worldwide are fighting to survive in famine-like conditions.” In 2023, there will likely be insufficient food in the system, which will push global food prices higher. Haiti became the world’s first Black-led republic when it overthrew French colonial control in 1804. However, the country is regularly exposed to natural hazards and the effects of climate change and faces recurring socio-economic and political challenges. The roots of these challenges include France forcing Haiti to pay reparations which indebted future generations and hampered economic progress for decades. SOS Children's Village Tryavna, established in 1993, is the first of its kind in Bulgaria. This year we celebrate its 30th anniversary. Build on plot of land of 25 000 square meters, the SOS Children’s village consists of cozy family houses for SOS foster families, and SOS Consulting Center Tryavna, which provides support to children and families at risk, living in difficult social conditions. The playgrounds on the territory of the SOS village are used not only by its inhabitants, but also by children and youths and their parents from the neighborhood. Currently, the SOS village has a sports field that is used for football, basketball, and volleyball. There are also children’s swings, climbing frames, and trains, along with benches for resting. To further develop the outdoor space with fitness equipment, SOS Children Villages Bulgaria aims to purchase and install: a device for rehabilitation of hands and feet, and a combined device for outdoor fitness. The total needed sum, including transportation costs and installation fee, amounts to approximately BGN 3,500.
