Still reeling from storms on New Year’s Eve, California has continued to face additional rounds of severe storms as a result of multiple atmospheric rivers forming off the US west coast. Record-breaking heavy precipitation and strong winds have caused severe flooding and power outages, and damaged homes, businesses and infrastructure. At least 18 deaths have been blamed on the storms; Millions of Californians remain under flood watches, and thousands of people across multiple counties have been ordered to evacuate their homes. Cisco Foundation has launched a $25K California Flooding disaster campaign campaign which will support American Red Cross, Destination: Home, and World Central Kitchen. Employee gifts up to $10,000 will be matched and will not count against your annual $25K match allowance.

According to the U.S. Department of State, there are estimated to be 24.9 million adults and children who are subject to human trafficking around the globe. The Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the world’s largest known reservoirs of this metal are found, provides a substantial amount of the cobalt the world needs to meet its growing demand. Cobalt is a critical component in rechargeable car batteries and is indispensable for the transition from fossil fuels to sustainable energy sources. Despite the Commission's zero‑tolerance approach to child labor in trade agreements, it is estimated, according to reports by UN agencies, that in the southern Katanga province, more than 40 000 children are working in hazardous conditions in cobalt mines, with inadequate safety equipment and for very little money. It is estimated that 20% of the mines in the DRC are small-scale and use mostly child workers. These children, aged between 3 and 17, have to work in appalling and dangerous conditions, usually barefoot. According to the International Labour Organisation “child labour unifies all the activities which deprive children of their childhood, potential and dignity, along with harming their schooling and physical and mental development. We have created this fund to increase the effectiveness and protection of economic, social and cultural rights of local communities and traditional miners in relation to the exploitation of mineral resources, in the DRC. This will be achieved through a legal reform, the popularization of legal texts, awareness raising of local community leaders, of the judiciary and mine administration officials on their rights and obligations; in support of mining diggers rights and the monitoring of human rights related to the exploitation of natural resources. Two powerful earthquakes struck Turkey and Syria on the same day, killing more than 46,000 people and injuring thousands more. Homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure have been destroyed under layers of rubble. The two earthquakes measured 7.8M and 7.5M in strength and were among the strongest to hit Turkey since 1999 and 1939. Thousands of people, including many refugees, need shelter, food, and water in southern Turkey and northern Syria. Over the last two decades, the those suffering from depression and the suicide rate in the United States has sharply increased, making suicide one of the leading cause of death in our country, according to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Suicides have become the second-leading cause of death among teenagers in the United States. More youth die by suicide than from cancer, heart disease, AIDS, birth defects, stroke, pneumonia, influenza, and chronic lung disease. Bristol Bay feeds the world, producing more wild salmon than anywhere else on Earth. Recognizing the public benefit of this fishery, in 2020, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers denied a federal permit to construct a large-scale open pit mine in Bristol Bay's pristine headwaters. After years of new analysis, this is the second consecutive administration to conclude that the destruction of Bristol Bay salmon habitat is contrary to the public interest. However, because the mineral deposit beneath its headwaters remains, Bristol Bay will continue to be vulnerable to further attempts of large-scale mining. Eradicating extreme poverty for all people everywhere by 2030 is a pivotal goal of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Between 2015 and 2018, global poverty continued its historical decline, with the poverty rate falling from 10.1 per cent in 2015 to 8.6 per cent in 2018. Nowcasts suggest that owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the global poverty rate increased sharply from 8.3 per cent in 2019 to 9.2 per cent in 2020, representing the first increase in extreme poverty since 1998 and the largest increase since 1990 and setting back poverty reduction by about three years. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic reversed the steady progress of poverty reduction over the past 25 years. This unprecedented reversal is being further exacerbated by rising inflation and the impacts of the war in Ukraine. It is estimated that these combined crises will lead to an additional 75 million–95 million people living in extreme poverty in 2022, compared with pre-pandemic projections.
