The incessant rains in Maharashtra in second half of July'21 have wrecked havoc. Widespread floods have been reported across many districts. The worst-hit districts are Kolhapur, Raigad, Sangli, Ratnagiri, Satara and Sindhudurg, hitting a total of 890 villages. Basic infrastructure such as roads, water supply, and electricity was disrupted in several areas. Over a lakh people have been displaced and are without proper shelter, food and medical help.

A major storm system stalled over Western Europe on July 14-15, leading to record-setting rain over Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, France and the Netherlands. Some parts of Germany received two months of rain in 24-48 hours, leading to rivers overtopping their banks, flash flooding through communities, and hundreds of people injured, missing or dead. The Ahr, Volme and Dussel rivers all overtopped their banks with record-setting water levels, which led to evacuation orders and emergency declarations in multiple cities. As the water continued to flow downstream, it filled dams past their capacity, leading to more evacuations as infrastructure was stretched – sometimes beyond its breaking limit. There has been extensive damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure in the worst natural disaster the region has faced in more than half a century.

Several dams and reservoirs have breached warning levels, and soldiers have been mobilised to divert rivers which have burst their banks. Flights and train operations in many parts of Henan have also been suspended. They were reportedly provided food at first but this is now said to be in low supply. The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou Hospital also briefly lost power on Tuesday night, though this has now been restored, said a statement on Weibo by the Zhengzhou Municipal Party Committee. It added that 600 critically ill patients had been transferred to another location. A 20-metre (65ft) breach has emerged in the dam in Luoyang city after it was damaged by storms, officials said. Soldiers have been deployed to the area and a statement from the army warned it could "collapse at any time". In Zhengzhou, unverified video footage showed passengers in flooded subway carriages with water reaching their shoulders.

The second wave of COVID is devastating India. Ahmednagar District, where Snehalaya operates is one of the worst-hit with no beds, oxygen, or medicines available to our largely rural population. We are pressuring authorities to improve the situation while also operating our own medical facilities & offering vital support to as many of the 150,000 plus in our district who have tested positive with COVID. Since March 2021 a flood of positive cases has overburdened medical facilities throughout our district and in April we were in the top ten worst-affected districts in India with over 1,000 new cases a day. With high demand & limited medical facilities available for COVID patients it is the poorest in society who are hardest hit. Cases of trafficking, child marriage, and domestic violence are also increasing & access to support is limited by lockdowns. Our 100-bed hospital is currently treating around 3000 COVID patients a day & a 150-bed COVID Care Center has free medical & quarantine facilities for asymptomatic patients & those with mild to moderate symptoms. Outreach work, ambulance services, community radio, and 24/7 helplines are helping us reach 5 million people, including women and children who are victims of the shadow pandemic causing increased domestic violence, child marriage & trafficking cases. Potential Long Term Impact By supporting the most vulnerable groups with medical support during the current second wave we will improve their chances of surviving the pandemic crisis and reduce the number of people requiring our help once the crisis ends. Cisco Sambrama volunteers are actively participating in all the COVID-19 relief efforts led by Rashtrotthana Parishat. Rashtrotthana Parishat is an NGO working in the field of health and education since 1965. Rashtrotthana Parishat has set up four in-situ COVID Care Centers (CCCs) with permission from BBMP. The locations are 1. Jaigopal Garodia Rashtrotthana Vidya Kendra Ramamurthy Nagara, Bengaluru. 2. Rashtrotthana Vidya Kendra Banashankari, Bengaluru. 3. Mangala Vidya Mandira, Yelahanka Newtown, Bengaluru. 4. Vidyasagar Preschool, Sanjay Nagar, Bengaluru. These are facilities where COVID Patients with mild or no symptoms can be isolated and monitored to relieve the burden on the healthcare system as the city's daily COVID count has been riding to thousands. The facilities are being planned for 2 months at this instance. The organisation extended its support by providing home isolation kits for COVID-19 affected. Along with it, Rashtrotthana Parishat continuing its support for the Thalassemia patients by providing free medical assistance for them. AID has a presence in more than 20 states of India, 35+ US chapters, and thousands of volunteers who continuously volunteer and provide support. Your support will help provide relief across India.
