Emergency intake of 125 bunnies in DeKalb County, Georgia Fund
Georgia House Rabbit Society was alerted to a hoarding situation in Dekalb County in May 2021. At the property, they found over 150 rabbits crammed into 8 hutches, living outside in filthy conditions. There were several buns in horrible shape, and they took them right away for medical attention. All of the rabbits were confiscated, triaged, and given immediate medical attention. Unfortunately, a few did not make it. But the remainder are now safe. Georgia House Rabbit Society took in 125 bunnies. All of the confiscated rabbits need vet care, including spaying/neutering and medical attention. They are treating wounds from fighting, abscesses, mites, coccidia, syphilis, fleas, ticks, and sore hocks. Considering just a spay/neuter can cost $150-$180 per rabbit (not including other treatments that have been necessary), vet bills are mounting and they could use help! December 2021 Edit: This summer, one of the rabbits that were part of the hoarding case suddenly died. She was tested and came back positive for RHDV (a highly contagious and deadly virus in rabbits). The shelter had to be deep cleaned and closed for over 6 weeks. All the rabbits within the shelter, whether they were part of the hoarding case or not, had to be quarantined and vaccinated for RHDV. While it increases the cost of sheltering each rabbit, every new rabbit that GHRS takes into the shelter must be vaccinated as a precaution. Please consider donating to support their emergency responses this year.
