ALMA Backyard Farms’ mission is to help people who have been incarcerated reclaim their lives, repurpose unused land into productive urban farm plots, and reimagine community as a place for people and plants to thrive. Serving South Los Angeles County, ALMA was founded in 2013 with active urban farms in West Compton, East LA and San Pedro. These areas of concentrated disadvantage have disproportionate populations of parolees where access to affordable, fresh, organic food and family-friendly green spaces is scarce. Three core programs offer dignifying ways for people to give back and reconnect with their communities: Urban Agriculture Job Training; Peas-In-A-Pod Youth Education and Family Workshops. All of these are activated at our Farm Stands, currently open three Sundays per month.
