Many tools are needed in the “conservation toolbox,” particularly to drive conservation finance. By shifting our economic values to place higher value and appreciation for the resources and services that nature provides, we can better tackle the challenge of conserving critical ecosystems and living more sustainably. In the Amazon, conserving the forest requires that we fully value its diverse natural ecosystems, both economically and culturally. One exciting and inspiring way to do this is through food! Chefs and gastronomy can increase awareness and demand for delicious and healthy Amazon foods, creating a new way to value the rainforest. By forging partnerships for sustainable sourcing, creating new incentives for conservation, and opening up new economic opportunities for local stewards of biodiversity and cultural traditions, we can create a robust new way to catalyze conservation for the Amazon. Forest Trends has started working in partnership with chefs and other conservation organizations to unlock the potential of Amazonian foods in order to generate new appreciation for Amazon, create new opportunities for improved local nutrition and sustainable enterprises, and thereby support the conservation of the Amazon by providing economic alternatives for the people that live in and around it, to empower their stewardship of this globally important rainforest.
